Remote control with DSLR

I started researching the possibility of remote control of digital cameras, with a focus on DSLR cameras. It was hard work, since I had trouble finding the keywords I tried, such as:

Remote control, live preview, monitoring, remote capture, tv out.

Here's the skinny, according to my research:

None of the DSLR's offer live preview of what the camera sees. In order to see what the camera sees, you either have to snap a picture or take a preview picture. That's common for all of them that I've seen so far. This is because they have a mirror in front of the imaging chip, so in order to manage a live preview, you'd have to lock the mirror in the up position - and that isn't normally supported in this mode.

Nikon:

They sell a program called Camera Control Pro for their newer DSLRs.

There are also small remote control units, like the ML-L3, MC-DC1, Opteka RC-7,

 Canon:

Canon has a free program called Canon RemoteCapture download and download.com. This software works with many compact digicams, and some DSLR's. It provides live preview with the Canon S40 and a few others, as described here!

Breeze systems provide several programs for different generations of Canon DSLR's, including:

  • DSLR Remote Pro
  • PSRemote
  • 10DRemote
  • D30Remote
  • G2Remote (for compacts like G2 and powershot S-series)
  • RemoteCapture

Then there's the Cam4you utilities, Cam4you remote and TCamRemote by Hans-David Alkenius.

And then there are also small remote control units, like the RC1, TC80N3 Opteka RC-7, Adorama Wireless Radio Remote Release for Canon EOS 5D, 10D, 20D, 30D,
