Since I am a photographer I try to take in interest in modelling. My models are usually the girl next door, even literally. I'll even sell pictures of myself and my mom and dad whenever I get the chance. I'll stop someone on the street and ask them if they'd like to be model for a day (it usually takes only an hour or two, and occasionally even less time to shoot a good deal of film).
At the moment I'm mostly looking for girls in my own age group. There are plenty of models in the 15-24 age-range, but as we grow older we tend to have less confidence in the way we look. That's why there's a lack of models for stock photographers. The really interesting women/girls for us are the same as the women who buy the magazines our pictures appear in.
Most stock photographers use professional models. That's primarily because they have advertising sales in mind. When shooting for advertising the look of the models have to be absolutely right, and that involves using professionals both when it comes to models and stylists.
I guess my approach is different, since I usually shoot with the editorial market in mind. The girls I use as models can be of any type, thick or thin, as long as they are esthetically appealing. I'm also confident enough in my own skills as a photographer, and in my people skills - so I have no problem using amateur models.
If you'd like to break into modelling the problem is that there are very few sites on the net that deals with learning the business. There are also a lot of scary stuff that one should keep away from. The best would be to work only with those photographers who can supply references or who are recommended by reputable modelling agencies or people you trust.
