Cat bloggers

Wednesday, December 15th, 2004

There’s a new phenomenon in the blogging world. Cats who blog. They’re witty, eloquent, and pretty much the only blogs I read…

My favorite is Muddy, but then I’ve just gotten started looking at the blogs. I have to say Psychokitty looks interesting too. Of course, their owners are doing the actual writing, inspired by the cats. But there’s one cat who does his own typing: Ripley is very popular on LiveJournal.

Of course, my cat blog stands out, because I’m doing both the typing and the thinking. I doubt Pusur would be much interested, actually. These days he’s a lazy kitty. Alternating favorite sleeping spots. The new perch by the window and my bed, mostly. And then in the evenings, he gets acutely bored. The favorite toy right now is a sisal rope, wielded by one of his favorite humans. It’s got enough bounce, so it’s extra funny.

You know, I attended a cat show a few weeks ago. One of the vendors had this toy he said was the most popular among the cats and the judges:

The netshop (Norwegian), is at http://www.stargate.nu/.

Well, anyway, the toy is a wire of some sort that’s bouncey, with a fishing lure at the end. A fly type fishing lure. Apparently the cats can’t quite make out what the colorful thing at the end is, and it’s driving them wild.

My first cat show

Sunday, December 5th, 2004

I attended my first cat show ever yesterday. And no, I didn’t bring Pusur. I was just a spectator.

And I came home with renewed respect for Pusur.

True, he could never be a show cat (domestic class), because he’s way too high strung after he got lost as a kitten. Separation anxiety and fear of loud/weird noises.

But he still has the most fantastic tail I’ve ever seen. And as I suspected, his fur is very different from NFO (Norwegian Forest Cat) standard. I still don’t know exactly what kind of fur he has, but it’s a LOT fuller than NFO fur. Not necessarily as long, and less silky, but it’s like velvet, and feel wonderful to the touch. Much more so than either Maine Coon or NFO.

Catnip!

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2004

I’ve got a spray bottle with catnip. Pusur knows what’s in it. If I grab it and start shaking, he’ll look at me with eyes wide with excitement, and start following me around. Sometimes he’ll have trouble realizing what I’ve sprayed it on. Because I often find new things to spray.

He has one toy that’s really fun, but Pusur has gotten more sedate, and doesn’t play as much as he used to. So I sprayed it.

This is a black mouse on an elastic string, attached to a sort of clamp that fastens to the top of a door frame.

I’ve never seen him quite that wild with that thing before, except when he was a kitten.

These days he’s got pretty good motor control, and especially for holding mice. But this thing was on a string, and would occasionally get away from him. Which made him a little bit confused, and a bit irritated. He really kicked the heck out of that little thing! And some prancing and jumping, like he was showing off. And the occasional snide glance at me for laughing.

Fun stuff!

Cold outside, gaining weight

Monday, November 22nd, 2004

Pusur is taking small forays outside, but when the temperature gets to low (especially around 10-15 minus c), he’s pounding on the door after just a few minutes.

Got him on the weight yesterday. He ways an approximately 5,6 kg. That’s way more than he’s ever weighed. He’s gotten heavier each week lately. And his tummy is getting soft and invites a rub…

Wish he’d have a brother to rough house with inside. Now that he’s inside so much, he’s getting restless at night, inviting play.

Favorite spot

Sunday, November 21st, 2004

There’s a small cat tree (a perch with a sisal scratcher beneath it, essentially) that Pusur likes to sit on. It’s right next to a favorite recliner, with a view to the veranda and a bird feeder (when it’s in operation), and the TV if he’s inclined to swivel his head.

But today, there’s a cat bed with a fuzzy blanket over it, perching on top of the perch.

Pusur is spending all his time there today. Even a human lap can’t tempt him away!

So there you have it, a snug cat bed, with a fuzzy blanket, in a strategic spot, is a sure winner with a cat!

Intelligence test

Sunday, November 7th, 2004

I completed an intelligence test for cats for Pusur. Not an exact science of course, so the result wouldn’t have been totally accurate. But anyway, he scored 107, which is considered in the high end of average (101-108). That’s VERY good, since I’ve always considered him a bit dumb. I mean, he can’t figure out how to open doors! That’s a lot less than I’d expected of him. On the other hand, he DOES figure out the laser pointer, and also knows about TV being fake. I was really surprised to see Maine Coon’s test an average of 105 (204 participants), since they’re supposed to be very intelligent. Wegies (I signed him as Norwegian Forest Cat, even though he’s a mix) score an average of 101, with 163 participants.

Ticks and clothes lines

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2004

I’ve just come home from vacation. This was a family vacation, with some of the immediate family and some of the extended family close by, each in their own place.

I brought Pusur. Let’s just say I’ll find an alternative next year… But anyway, each night I checked him for ticks and never found any.

But my mom caught one! On her butt!!!!

Best guess is that a tick got into one of her knickers (under pants) as they were hanging drying on a clothes line at the edge of a thicket with several large trees.

Ouch!

I had a special tick remover pincers, so got it out. It was alive and kicking after the fact. Her butt sports a large red area.

Moral of the story? Be careful with hanging your clothes out to dry in tick related areas!

Yuk!

Saturday, June 26th, 2004

I’ve gone on record saying I’m glad my cat knows how to hunt. And I am. If he somehow got lost, I know he’d survive long enough to get back home.

But last night I opened the door to see if he wanted some food. And I see him with a big fat mouse on the cement slab right outside the door. Busily eating the mouse. There’s no trace of that mouse today! He must have eaten it or moved it!

That was really a gross experience seeing him eating the still warm mouse.

Double Yuk!
